Phishing scams are on the rise, and a recent report shows that 23% of people open phishing emails. The latest mainstream phishing scam isn’t initiated by email however, but by text. The new scam targets iPhone owners with a request for their personal information and starts with a personalised text from an account called “iSupport”.
It warns iPhone owners that their iCloud account has been deactivated and asks them to head to the website and re-enter their personal details: "To reactivate your account confirm your details here".
The text links to a fake Apple login page that asks for an Apple ID and password.
Because the messages being sent use the user’s name, many people are falling for the scam. Even cricketer Matt Prior almost fell for it, and had to ask his Twitter followers if it was genuine.
BTA suggests that the best way to avoid scams of this type is by never using the web address or link provided. Instead, always navigate to the company’s website yourself. This will help you avoid any risky sites that manage to make themselves look like the addresses they are spoofing. Also check that the site is verified by Google by looking for the little lock in the URL bar.

It isn’t clear where the scammers have picked up the information used to send out the scam. But it isn’t being sent out randomly, since the messages usually start with the person’s name and almost always have it accurately. A similar scam involving iTunes accounts, which circulated last October, asked users to enter their Apple ID, password, address, full name, and credit or debit card details.
